We are at peak wedding season, and if your postman has delivered a little envelope with an invitation to a great day out you’re probably looking forward to a wedding! Yay! A quick google search gives loads of ideas for brides and grooms planning a wedding, but there’s not so much out there for wedding guests, so we decided to round up our top tips for being an environmentally friendly wedding guest.
- The Outfit – We often plan our wedding outfits months in advance, after all it is one of the few occasions that we really get to look best. The fashion industry is notorious for its environmental impact but this is an easy one to reduce. We can wear something we already own, borrow from a friend, rent an outfit for the weekend, or scour second hand and vintage shops for a unique outfit. All of these options are greener than going out and buying a new outfit, and they’re easier on the pocket too.
- Transport – If the wedding is local to you, organise a mini-bus for your friends and family. Group transport reduces fuel emissions, increases the fun levels, and eliminates the need to find a designated driver at 2.00 in the morning. Its a win-win situation.
- Staying overnight? – When we do manage to get away for a night we are so excited we often don’t ask questions before we get there. Why not check out your hotel or B&B’s website to see if they have an environmental policy, check out their menus for local, in season food options, or phone them up in advance for a chat about what they do to reduce their environmental impact.
- The Gift – Cards with cash inside have become very popular as wedding gifts, but traditional gifts are often still given. Giving someone an unwanted gift that will gather dust under the bed in the spare room before going to the bin sometime around their couples five year anniversary is not good. Sometimes cash is king, as you know it won’t go to waste and will be used wisely. If you do still want to give a physical gift consider supporting a local crafts person, or something with a long lifespan that will last the family for many generations.
